Winter Season

Tue 20 Jan 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we move through the colder months, we are aware that seasonal coughs, colds and minor illnesses are more common at this time of year.

We would like to reassure families that school remains a safe and supportive environment, and regular attendance is extremely important for children’s learning, wellbeing and routine. In most cases, children with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or mild cough are well enough to attend school.

If your child is feeling slightly unwell but otherwise able to take part in the school day, we encourage you to continue sending them in. Where appropriate, children may be given paracetamol before school to help manage minor symptoms, provided this is done in line with the recommended dosage and your child feels well enough to attend.

There are, however, times when children should be kept at home. These include:

  • A measured high temperature or fever
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea (children should remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode)
  • Illnesses that significantly affect your child’s ability to learn or take part in normal activities

There is NHS guidance available for families on “Is my child too ill for school?” which provides helpful advice on when to keep your child at home and when they can attend safely.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain good attendance while also keeping our school community healthy. If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to attend school, please do not hesitate to contact us for advice.

Yours faithfully

J Norman
