Student Engagement

We engage all students in their learning by promoting metacognitive approaches to teaching and learning. Our 5 Pillars approach to teaching and learning spans the curriculum so that all students are aware of how and why they are learning. Similarly all teachers make use of learning and topic journeys so that students can see the ‘bigger picture’ of every lesson that they are a part of. Our praise culture means that effort and success are routinely recognised and encouraged. As students progress across the key stages they are given opportunities to shape their own curriculum as they make choices about subjects they will study in Key Stage 4. Advice and guidance underpin our curriculum modelling ensuring our students have regular points of discussion with senior leaders and parents/ carers about their study choices, changing interests and developing aspirations.

We provide points of flexibility and personalisation within our broad and balanced offer to enhance student engagement and success. At Level 1 and Level 2 (including GCSE) every subject / qualification is open to every student. There are no pathways that prevent students from studying certain subject combinations. We build our timetables around our students’ choices, removing the restriction of option blocks to create greater freedom for students to deepen their selected study.
